The nose is suggestive of black cherry, mocha with a hint of dried herbs and earth. Medium to full bodied, this wine offers generous flavors of crushed red and black cherries, espresso, and cranberry that are expertly balanced by whispers of dried herbs and baking spices. The lingering finish grows as it progresses and echoes flavors of black fruits and spice.
With the 2018 harvest we enjoyed cooler temperatures, a long, even growing season with good fruit set, good rainfall and higher yields and smooth ripening gave us the opportunity to dial in the flavor profiles, acidity and ripeness of our individual blocks. A brief burst of rain in early October was followed by a nice dry spell with moderate heat, and we were able to harvest beautiful, grapes with that were balanced to perfection by nature. Our Cabernet Franc grapes grow on sandy, free draining Cortina loam soils. Cortinas added gravel texture helps create wines with rich tannins and purity of varietal character. Lyon Vineyard was the source for our Right Bank-inspired blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Our Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc were co-fermented in a 10-ton fermenter, whereas the Merlot was harvested fully ripe a bit later and fermented separately. Each varietal contributes some desired attributes; Cabernet Franc contributes red fruit impressions (raspberry and cherry notes) and tobacco leaf aromatics; Petit Verdot adds color, structure, and floral aromatics and Merlot grounds the blend with black fruits (black cherry and blueberry) and plum flavors.
46% Cabernet Franc, 42% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot
